Who this is for: couples who have said yes and want to know what to do once the night arrives, and what to do the day after.
Before you leave
About 20 minutes before you need to go, you get a notification: Leave in 20 minutes. It tells you how you are getting there. The rest of the night can stay sealed.
If you do not want this reminder, you can switch it off. See notifications.
On the night, This week takes you straight to your plan. If you turned on breadcrumb mode, it opens the Tonight screen. If not, it shows your whole plan.
What you see
Your plan lists every stop with its time, name and a short description, plus the walks in between. This is the plan you opened when you both said yes. See your weekly plan.
Tap Directions to open your maps app. iPhone opens Apple Maps. Other phones open Google Maps.
Checking in is always a tap. We never track your location in the background.
Breadcrumb mode
Breadcrumb mode keeps the night a surprise. You only see the stop you are at. The next one stays sealed until you finish the one you are at.
How to turn it on: after the reveal, tap Keep it a surprise tonight. It says: Breadcrumb mode: each stop opens when you get there.
Who gets it: breadcrumb mode comes with Keep the Spark. With Set up this date you get it for that date. The free plan does not include it. See Keep the Spark.
What you see once it is on:
- At the top, Tonight · Stop 1 of 3 (your own number of stops) and a row of progress bars.
- You’re here, and the name of the place you are at.
- A card for the next stop, still sealed. It shows a lock, a short clue in quotes, and how far it is, such as 8 min on foot. It says opens when you check out here.
- A button: We’re done here. Open stop 2.
When you are ready to go, tap We’re done here. Open stop 2. The next stop opens with its name and details, and the stop after it stays sealed.
Either of you can tap it. Check-ins are shared between the two of you.
On the last stop, nothing is left sealed. The card says That’s the whole night. and the button reads We’re done here. Head home. After you tap it, you see Home safe? See you Sunday. and the time your afterglow question arrives.
Running late
If you are going to be late to a table, tell the venue.
On a stop where the venue confirmed your table, tap Running late? Let them know. A sheet opens: We’ll email the venue so they keep your table. Choose About 10 minutes, About 20 minutes or About 30 minutes. When it sends, you see Sent. They know you’re on your way.
The email asks the venue to keep your table if they can. We cannot promise they will.
If the venue has a phone number, the sheet also has Call instead.
If the stop does not have a confirmed table, the line reads Running late? No booking here, take your time. If we have the venue’s phone number, tapping it opens your phone’s dialler. If not, you will see No booking to change here. Take your time.
Working with no signal
Cities have dead spots. unplan is ready for them.
- Your plan works offline. When you have opened your plan with signal, the app keeps a copy on your phone for the night. An offline copy shows a label that starts with OFFLINE and the date. Open the plan once before you head out.
- “We’re done here” is kept. If you tap it with no signal, you see Saved. We’ll send it as soon as you have signal. The tap is kept on your phone with the time you made it. It is sent when your phone is back online, as long as unplan is open or you open it again, and a tap is never thrown away just because your session had ended: it is sent once you are signed in again. The next stop opens once it has been sent. Until then, it stays sealed.
- Running late needs signal. Without it, you see No signal right now. Tap again in a moment.
If the plan changes
If it rains, a place closes, or a table falls through, we may swap one stop. You get a notification and an email, and a Change of plan note shows on your plan. See Plan B.
Sunday afterglow
The day after your night (a Sunday, for a Saturday plan), you answer a few quick questions about how it went. This is the afterglow.
You get a notification at 11 AM, How was Saturday? (or the night you had). This week also shows How was Saturday? with Start the afterglow. It opens the day after your night, not before.
What you do:
- Do it again? Pick one: Not really, Maybe or Again, soon. You need to pick one to go on.
- What made it? Pick any tags that fit: The walk between, Hidden spot, Too loud, Too rushed, Great food.
- Add one photo to your journal. Just one. It becomes the cover of this plan in your journal. Either of you can replace it. If it will not upload, try a smaller photo. Photos are optional.
- Tap Seal it in the journal.
It is private. The screen says Private. Maya won’t see your answer. Next week’s plan will. You never see your partner’s answer either. Your answers help shape next week’s plan: we do not send you back to a place within 12 weeks, and never to a place either of you rated Not really.
Your streak. The streak counts the weeks in a row you had a date: a night out, or the at-home plan. A week you skipped on purpose doesn’t break it (and doesn’t add to it); a week where nobody voted ends it. It shows on This week and on the afterglow screen. See skipping a week.
Your finished plan is now in the Journal tab with your photo and your own answer.
A thank-you
Right after the afterglow you can send your partner one short line about the night: Send Maya a thank-you? Pick Thank you for tonight., That was lovely. Again soon? or Best night in a while., or write a few words of your own, then tap Send it. Not now skips it.
- It is separate from your rating. Your partner sees only these words, never how you rated the night. The sheet says so: Maya sees these words on This week. Your rating stays yours.
- No notification. Your partner sees it on This week for a week, under From Theo.
- You can send one for each date, from the night until two weeks after. Sending again replaces your line.
Did this feel pushy?
Every fourth date you rate, This week asks one more question for a few days: Did this feel pushy? It means the plan, the extras and the reminders. Tap No, A little or Yes, or Skip if you would rather not say. It is asked once, and the card goes when you answer.
It is private, like the afterglow. Your partner never sees your answer, or whether you answered. We only look at the numbers for your whole city, to keep plans easy and never salesy.
