One plan. Two yeses. Zero planning.
This is the whole of unplan, in the order it happens each week. We'll use Theo and Maya, a couple in Phoenix, as the example.
Pair up. It takes two.
Theo signs up at app.unplan.me with Apple, Google or a 6-digit email code, and sends Maya a link. She opens it, signs in, and they're paired. unplan does nothing for one person alone: no plan seals until both of you are in. One account each, one partner at a time.
Guardrails. Set once, never broken.
Together you set five things. They're hard limits: a plan never crosses one.
- Home base and radius. A point on the map (not your street address) and how far you'll go: 1, 3 or 6 miles in US cities.
- Budget per date. $50, $100 or $200+ for the two of you, drinks included.
- Getting around. Walk, transit, car, any mix.
- Food rules. Vegetarian, no shellfish, and so on, per person. "No alcohol" means no bars and no drinks-first nights.
- Nights usually free. Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Either of you can change them, and both of you see who changed what. Theo picks walk and transit, $100, Friday and Saturday; Maya adds vegetarian.
If your rules leave fewer than five nights we can build, we tell you both and offer to loosen one thing for that week only. A change sticks only if you both agree.
Thursday, 6 PM. The sealed plan.
Every Thursday at 6 PM, your city's time, a card lands by push and by email. It's sealed: you see the mood and four clues, never the place.
That's all either of you gets. No venue names, no addresses, no map. Code filters real places against your guardrails; a language model only picks from that shortlist and writes the words, and every line is checked so it never names a place.
The blind vote. Yes or veto, in private.
Theo and Maya each tap Accept or Veto. Neither sees the other's choice, ever. When Maya votes, Theo's card says only "Maya has voted. You'll find out how once you do."
- Voting closes Friday at 6 PM. If one of you hasn't voted by then, the night becomes a free at-home plan. At most one reminder, and it never says how your partner voted.
- One veto a week. After that, the plan is final.
- A veto can carry a reason (Not the mood, Too pricey, Too far, Bad night) or none. Reasons are private too, and they tune next week.
Plans are tuned to whichever of you was less keen last time, so the same person doesn't keep compromising.
Two yeses. It opens.
The seal breaks on both phones at once. Here's what Theo and Maya's week opens to:
- 7:30 PM [Venue 1] · cocktail bar · table for 2, booked under Theo
- 9:00 PM [Venue 2] · night market · 8 min on foot
- A table held, on Keep the Spark or Just this weekend. The venue gets a first name, the party size and the time. Nothing else.
- Calendar invites. An .ics file and a Google Calendar link for each of you.
- Directions to the first stop, and a "Leave in 20 minutes" push on the night.
- Invite another couple for a double date (paid plans).
Plans are one to three stops, within your radius, open for the whole time with half an hour to spare, and never a place you've been in the last 12 weeks.
A veto. Last call.
If either of you vetoes, you both see the last call: exactly one alternative, built for the same night and different in at least two ways (mood, price, kind of place, indoors or out). Its table is held too. Both of you have to accept it.
Veto the last call and you stay in: a free at-home plan arrives the same evening. There is never a third card. One plan, one alternative, that's the whole idea.
The night. Just show up.
- Breadcrumb mode (optional, paid). Tap "Keep it a surprise tonight" and only the current stop is open. The next one stays sealed, with a clue, until you tap "We're done here." Checking in is a tap: we never track your location.
- Plan B. We re-check every stop before the night: weather, opening hours, the table. Rain or a closure means we swap that one stop for one that passes the same rules, and tell you both at once. Calendars update, and you can always keep the original.
- No signal? The opened plan is saved on your phone for the night.
Sunday. Afterglow.
The morning after, each of you answers "Do it again?" (Not really, Maybe, Again soon) and picks a few tags. It's private: Maya won't see Theo's answer, but next week's plan will. Either of you adds one photo; it becomes the plan's cover in your journal, your couple's history of nights out.
Your streak counts weekends in a row with a plan done, or skipped on purpose. Skipping a week from the home screen keeps it.
What's free, what's paid.
- Free ($0). A sealed plan every week from at-home and low-cost ideas: a park, a café you haven't tried, a free event. No table holds. The week's premium plan waits on a locked card in case you want it.
- Just this weekend ($2.99 once). Opens this week's locked premium plan: the full venue pool, a table held, breadcrumb mode and double dates for that weekend. If the first stop falls through and we can't replace it, the $2.99 comes back by itself.
- Keep the Spark ($7.99 / month, or $59.99 / year). A premium plan every Thursday from the full pool, hidden and trending spots, table held. Breadcrumb mode and double dates every week. One subscription covers both of you. Cancel any time.
Where it works today.
Phoenix, Boston, Austin and San Francisco, then one city a week. Your home base decides your city. Set it somewhere we're not open yet and you land on that city's waitlist; we email you the Thursday it opens. About each city →
Five a week. Never more.
Thursday's card (push and email, always both). One reminder if your partner has voted and you haven't. "Both in" when the seal breaks. "Leave in 20 minutes" on the night. "How was it?" the morning after. That's the cap, per person, per week.
