How to plan a surprise date your partner will actually enjoy

Give clues, not secrets: how to keep a date a surprise without leaving the other person anxious or underdressed.

How to plan a surprise date your partner will actually enjoy

A good surprise is not a mystery. The person being surprised needs to know enough to relax: when to be ready, what to wear, roughly what it costs and how you are getting there.

Give four clues

The time to leave, the dress code, the budget and the way you will travel. With those, nobody turns up in the wrong shoes or worries about the bill, and the place itself can stay a secret.

Stay inside their limits

A surprise that breaks a rule (too far, too late, too expensive, something they do not eat or drink) stops being a gift. Plan inside what you know they like.

Reveal in stages

Tell them the first stop when you leave, and the next one only when you are done with the first. Part of the fun is not knowing what comes next.

That is how an unplan plan works: four clues on Thursday, and on Keep the Spark, breadcrumb mode opens each stop only when you are done with the one before.
