There is no correct number, but once a week is a rhythm most couples can keep and still look forward to. It is often enough to feel like a habit and rare enough to feel like an occasion.
Why a fixed night helps
A date night that is "whenever we get round to it" rarely happens. A fixed night, the same evening every week, stops being a decision. You stop asking whether, and only ask what.
Why the "what" is the hard part
Couples rarely skip a date night because they do not want one. They skip it because nobody had the energy to choose. That is the part worth handing off.
What counts
An evening at home counts, if it was planned. So does a cheap one. What makes it a date is that you set the time aside for each other and that somebody thought about it in advance.
unplan is built around this: one sealed plan a week for the night you choose (Thursday's drop, by default for Saturday), so the habit keeps itself.
