Date night on a budget: what actually matters

A cheaper evening is not a lesser one. Where to spend a small budget, and where it makes no difference.

Date night on a budget: what actually matters

What couples remember about an evening is rarely what it cost. They remember that it was planned, that it was a little new, and that they had each other's attention.

Spend on one thing

If there is a little to spend, put it on one part of the night (a dessert, one drink somewhere with a view, a class) and keep the rest free.

Newness is free

A place you have never been, a different time of day, a route you have not walked. Novelty does more for an evening than price.

Set the number before you go

Agree on the budget in advance so nobody spends the evening doing sums. A number you both know is the quiet part of a good date.

Every unplan plan keeps to the budget you set together, and the free plan is built from at-home and low-cost ideas. For more, see five free nights that feel planned.
